Butterfly placemat
Our June challenge was to use Lite Seam-A-Seam 2. Debbie demoed how to use it and then gave everyone an 8.5 x 11" piece along with a printout of a butterfly outline. We could use the butterfly if we wished or do any other shape.

Inspiration fabric
I decided to make another placemat for Meals on Wheels. It is fun to learn a new technique and make something useful at the same time. I found a large enough piece of butterfly fabric in my stash for the placemat front. Then I pulled coordinating pieces from my scraps for the butterfly, binding and backing.

Butterfly body
I traced the butterfly outline onto the gridded side of the Steam-A-Seam as directed. I also then drew just the body onto another piece. I trimmed around about a 1/4" to 1/2" from the line. I peeled off the other side of the paper and then ironed it onto the wrong side of my fabrics. I peeled off the gridded side then and was able to play around with the position until it was just where I wanted it. The appliqué is movable until a final pressing.

Stitching detail
I used black thread and did a triple stitch all around. Stitching it down is not necessary but I liked the definition the stitches provided. Instead of doing the antenna from fabric, I just used thread stitching. I think it mimics the fabric nicely.

I backed it with fusible fleece, and added the backing and binding. Another placemat for Meals on Wheels, a new technique learned and a bit more fabric out of my stash. Wins all around.
